CIT-Day Two

Today was a busy day. We had therapy, kindergarten round-up, library day and the kids art fair. We had a fun time though especially at the art fair. They had this blank cardboard cut out house that they just let the kids decorate anyway they wanted. Sammy had fun putting stickers on the house, walking through all the art work and dancing to the band that was playing.

We had our first post cast therapy. Stephanie was so impressed with what he was already doing. She had written down some goals for him during the casting time, and she said in one day he has met all my goals. She is going to make new goals. What surprised her the most was how engaged he still was in playing with the cast on. He was playing normally (not as gracefully of course) with his left hand. He colored, carried things, used the steering wheel, was pushing toys, all with his left hand.

Challenges today were two handed play. Sammy is very independent and is having a hard time not being able to do things that he is used to doing. Such as opening zip lock bags to eat his snack, carrying a toy and then using the other hand. There are a lot of activities that require TWO HANDS. I am still super surprised that he hasn't cried or thrown a fit about the cast. He simple asks us to "Ake off" when things get challenging. Two handed play was a concern I had about CIT a year ago, when we saw him using his left hand for so many supporter activities. Our doctor told us the goal is that after this month they have more use of the affected hand, thus having more two handed activities he feels it is worth not having both hands for this short period. It is still frustrating for me to watch him struggle. Also same as yesterday he just is having a hard time drinking with his sippy cups. He downs the fluids normally, so we just need to make sure he is getting enough liquids throughout the day.

All in all a great second day.
